The Reggae Poster Contest Vision

The objective of the First International Reggae Poster Contest 2012 is to continue to build awareness for Reggae music and to celebrate the global achievements of Reggae and its positive impact on the world. The term Reggae encompasses all the popular Jamaican musical genres; Ska, Rocksteady, Roots Reggae, Dub, Dancehall and the unique Jamaican Sound System. The Poster competition is part of a bigger vision that seek to establish a Reggae Hall of Fame in Kingston, Jamaica.

We will also use this opportunity to raise funds to support the amazing work of a historic and wonderful Jamaican institution, the Alpha Boys’ School. The Alpha Boys’ School is a jewel in the center of Kingston, and it shines all over Jamaica and, through its graduates, in the music they create, throughout the world. Alpha decades of success with young Jamaicans, entering raw and emerging world-renown musicians themselves is testimony to the storied success. Without this amazing institution and its successful music program; Ska, Rocksteady, Dub and Roots Reggae music may not have been invented.

The Goal and Theme of the Contest

Through the First International Reggae Poster Contest, our goal is to auction off the 100 best posters from the contest with all funds going toward the world-renown Alpha Boys’ School.

The theme of the contest is: Toward a Reggae Hall of Fame: Celebrating great Jamaican Music.

We are looking for your talent and vision.

We are very excited to see what designers can come up with in their original poster designs that will capture the energy and vibe of Reggae Music. The goal is simple: create a poster about Reggae Music – the rest is up to your imagination. Feel free to explore topics of Reggae covering any one of the genres. In addition, incorporate the contest theme as part of the poster design.

Reggae music is one of the world’s few living folk music genres.

It has remained incredibly popular, spontaneously generated by people’s experiences, emotions and traditions. Rising from humble roots, Reggae has grown to influence many cultures.

Sharing your creative imagination will help us to support our vision to establish The Reggae Hall of Fame. This vision is intended to encapsulate all the achievements of Reggae in an iconic style of contemporary architecture. The Reggae Hall of Fame will be a monument to the achievements of Jamaica’s popular music and culture. The mission of The Reggae Hall of Fame will be to collect, conserve, and study the popular Jamaican musical genres. The Reggae Hall of Fame will exhibit the treasure of Reggae music and narrate the stories from a variety of perspectives for a broad and diverse audience.

This will be the world’s first museum of this magnitude, celebrating the living heritage of Reggae music.
